Years 9&10: Overview

Australian Curriculum Mathematics Training Course for Years 9 & 10

This combined course covers the key topics from the Australian curriculum for Years 9 and 10, preparing students for senior mathematics:

Number and Algebra (Year 9): Working with real numbers, including indices and scientific notation. Solving problems with linear equations and graphing linear and non-linear relationships.

Measurement and Geometry (Year 9): Calculating the area and volume of more complex objects. Using trigonometry (sine, cosine, tangent) to find unknown sides and angles.

Statistics and Probability (Year 9): Analysing and comparing data sets, and understanding the impact of outliers. Calculating probabilities for multi-step events.

Year 10 Topics: Expanding on algebra with quadratic equations, functions, and logarithms. Understanding circle geometry and solving advanced trigonometry problems. Applying statistical analysis and probability to real-world situations.

Years 9&10: Number & Alegbra

This strand moves from simple equations to sophisticated algebraic modelling and financial literacy.

Financial Mathematics: Solving problems involving compound interest and depreciation.

Indices and Surds: Applying all index laws to numerical and algebraic expressions, including fractional and negative indices. Understanding and working with surds.

Algebraic Techniques: Expanding and factorising complex algebraic expressions, including binomials, trinomials (quadratics), and the difference of two squares.

Equations: Solving linear equations, and progressing to quadratic equations using methods like factorising, completing the square, and the quadratic formula.

Graphing: Graphing linear equations (gradient-intercept form) and exploring non-linear graphs, with a deep focus on parabolas (finding x/y-intercepts and turning points).

Years 9&10: Measurement & Geometry

This strand introduces trigonometry and applies measurement skills to complex 3D objects.

Measurement: Calculating the surface area and volume of more complex objects, including cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres, as well as composite shapes.

Pythagoras' Theorem: Applying the theorem in 2D and 3D contexts to find unknown lengths.

Trigonometry: This is a major focus. It starts with establishing the basic ratios (SOH CAH TOA) to find unknown sides and angles in right-angled triangles. It then extends to non-right-angled triangles using the Sine and Cosine Rules.

Geometric Reasoning: Proving and applying properties of similar triangles and other geometric shapes to solve problems.

Years 9&10: Statistics & Probability

This strand focuses on analysing and comparing data sets and understanding more complex chance events.

Statistics: Representing and interpreting data using histograms and box plots. Analysing data by calculating and comparing the mean, median, and range, and introducing standard deviation as a measure of spread. It also covers bivariate data (scatter plots).

Probability: Calculating the probability of multi-step experiments using tree diagrams and tables. It also introduces the concepts of conditional probability and independent events.
