Year 7: Course Overview

Australian Curriculum Mathematics Training Course for Year 7

This course covers all three strands of the Australian Year 7 curriculum:

Number and Algebra: Working with positive and negative integers, fractions, decimals, and percentages. Using variables to represent numbers and creating algebraic expressions.

Measurement and Geometry: Calculating the area of triangles and parallelograms, and the volume of rectangular prisms. Describing and classifying angles, 2D shapes, and transformations.

Statistics and Probability: Calculating mean, median, mode, and range. Describing and interpreting data, and understanding the probability of events.

Year 7: Numbers & Algebra

This strand focuses on building a strong foundation with numbers and introducing algebraic thinking.

Number: Working with positive and negative integers (whole numbers), understanding index notation (e.g., 43 x 73) and square roots.

Fractions, Decimals & Percentages: Solving problems using all four operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide) with fractions and decimals. This includes finding equivalences between them and using them for financial decisions, like "best buys."

Algebra: Using variables (letters) to represent numbers, solving simple linear equations (e.g., 2x + 3 = 11), and plotting points on a Cartesian plane (a graph with x and y axes).

Year 7: Measurement & Geometry

This strand deals with shapes, space, and measurement.

Measurement: Using formulas to find the perimeter and area of shapes like rectangles, triangles, and parallelograms. It also includes calculating the volume of rectangular prisms (boxes).

Geometry: Classifying different types of triangles and quadrilaterals (4-sided shapes) based on their properties.

Angles: Investigating angles, including those on a straight line, at a point, and vertically opposite angles. This also covers the angles created when a line (a transversal) cuts across two parallel lines.

Year 7: Statistics & Probability

This strand is about collecting, understanding, and interpreting data, as well as the likelihood of events.

Statistics: Collecting and representing data using dot plots and stem-and-leaf plots. Students learn to calculate and interpret the mean (average), median (middle value), mode (most common value), and range of a data set.

Probability: Describing the chance of simple events happening using fractions, decimals, and percentages. This includes listing all possible outcomes of an experiment (the 'sample space').
